{"id":80,"date":"2015-04-09T15:45:59","date_gmt":"2015-04-09T15:45:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.funtymemagic.com\/?p=80"},"modified":"2015-04-09T15:52:19","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T15:52:19","slug":"our-magic-course-outline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.funtymemagic.com\/?p=80","title":{"rendered":"Our Magic Course Outline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ed Williams and I set out our definition of magic in a prior post.\u00a0 We used the definition to develop our course to teach magicians how to effectively perform rather than doing tricks.\u00a0 We spent many many wonderful hours reducing our thoughts and experiences into a form that could be taught to others.\u00a0 Ed was one of the few magicians that I personally knew\u00a0 that shared a common understanding on a theory of performing.<\/p>\n<p>This is the outline of the course:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Session #1 <\/em><\/strong><em>(3 hours)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Orientation and introduction to the course<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Definition of magic.<\/p>\n<p>The Iceberg Principle<\/p>\n<p>How the public perceives magic. Purveyor of puzzles or Performing Artist?<\/p>\n<p>Be prepared to be video taped doing a few of your favorite effects or a routine. This does not need to be a polished routine. However, you should have the mechanics of the trick down. This will be used for future reference.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Session #2<\/em><\/strong> <em>(3 hours<\/em><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lecture &#8211; Finding Your Character &#8211; <em>Art of Performing <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dramatic Structure, Theory of Method Acting, Improvisation, Serious Business of Comedy.<\/p>\n<p>Question &amp; Answer Session.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Session #3 <\/em><\/strong><em>(3hours)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lecture &#8211; Using Your Character &#8211; <em>The Art of Entertainment <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Casting Yourself, Presentation, Pacing, Rhythm, Practice, Rehearsal, Using the tools from your toolbox (<em>Body, Timing, Music, Stagecraft, Lighting, Assistants, Properties, Volunteers, Stagecraft, Performing Space).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Question and Answer Session.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Session #4 <\/em><\/strong><em>(3 hours)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lecture &#8211; Setting Your Character Free &#8211; <em>Art of Audience Communication<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Suspension of Disbelief, Emotional Appeal, Applause and Reaction, Controlling Attention, Your Role in the Conversation, Your Audience\u2019s Role in the Conversation. Conversing Without Words (Beware! This can be a mime field). Putting it all together.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Session #5 <\/em><\/strong><em>(1.5 hours)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal Instruction I, Video Session <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each individual\u2019s performance will be videotaped and will be reviewed during a private 2 on 1 session. Suggestions will be made and areas that could use improvements pointed out that will enhance the performance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Session #5 <\/em><\/strong><em>(1.5 hours)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Personal Instruction II, Video Session <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this second 2 on 1 private session each individual will again be videotaped applying the information gained from the previous session. Further fine tuning of the performance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Final Performance <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All participants will be invited to perform in a special performance at Funtyme Magic.
